Lewis is the principal and director of Hopetoun Legal Limited.
Sometimes lawyers' backgrounds or CVs are dead boring, or largely irrelevant.
Lewis however has had a really interesting and wide ranging career. This means his clients get not only a great legal mind, but a highly practical and worldly wise one too.
After graduating, Lewis worked for well known Auckland firm, Cairns Slane, before getting some OE in. After returning to New Zealand, and a stint with Mitsubishi Trading in a commercial role, Lewis returned to the legal fray and gained valuable experience of both law and life working in a couple of niche firms in Parnell. To say this work was varied would be quite an understatement. Among his tasks was to (successfully) act for, and obtain the initial release from prison of, Rene Chignell (the dominatrix involved in the famous Peter Plumley-Walker - Cricketing Umpire murder case).
Then followed (1994 to 2004) several years working in the corporate world, including Carter Holt Harvey, Transpower NZ, TelstraSaturn and Industrial Research. These roles encompassed just about everything there is to do in a corporate office, with an emphasis on contract negotiation and drafting and governance issues. More details of the importance and complexity of the work can be seen in relevant Service pages.
Lewis is of Ngai Tuhoe descent and this was another powerful motivator for him to return to legal practice. From 2004 to 2011 Lewis worked at Corban Revell and Campbell Law, further honing his legal skills with Commercial, Construction, Property, Trusts and Maori Law of all types.
Hopetoun Legal was established in 2011. "It was always something I wanted to do" he says.
Lewis is friendly and likeable. He balances his work with a love of the outdoors, with surfing and tennis common pursuits. Family is always the main focus but he continues to have a passion for studying Maori history.
Lewis is a member of the Grey Lynn Business Association, and the K-Road Business Association. He takes pride in his membership of Te Hunga Roia Maori o Aotearoa (The Maori Law Society Inc). Lewis is also a member of the NZ Law Society Property Law Section.
